Summer Programme 2013 – Suggestion Form

Wednesday 20th March 2013

As per Leo’s announcement last night, if you would like to make a suggestion for the Summer Programme 2013 you can use an online form to do so.

Change of Programme – Tuesday 5th March 2013

Friday 1st March 2013

Due to work commitments, Chris Weston will not be able to give his presentation to us next Tuesday (5th March); we will get Chris back at a later date.

The good news it that it gives us the opportunity to have the previously cancelled 3rd Projected Image competition (there are some great images), even better news is that well known Brighton Photographer Adam Bronkhorst, the original judge, is able to come and comment on the images.

The competition will be judged as it was uploaded in January, so you cannot now add or amend an image. If you were unable to upload an image then you only have to wait to the following week when Nick Eastham will be judging the 4th Projected Image competition. The catch-up rules allow you to upload 2 images if you missed the last competition

You can look at Adam Bronkhorst’s work below: http://adambronkhorst.com/

Tuesday January 22nd – Meeting Cancelled

Gill Golding

Monday 14th January 2013

Some time ago I asked one of our members, Gill Golding, to write me a small piece about her amazing progress in photography since taking it up only three years ago.
This is her e-mail that I received today:-
Hi David
It’s taken me a while which has been partially due to me waiting to see if I was offered a place at Goldsmiths prior to writing up anything but also a sense of panic in me – like all of you have so much in the way of skills and experience so I feel a little guilty almost!!
Anyway I was offered a place on the MA Photography and Urban Cultures at Goldsmiths for next autumn which I’m absolutely thrilled about.
The journey has been an extraordinary one. I started taking photos in April 2010 – I’d only ever taken very occasional holiday snaps til then, broke my hip after 2 weeks so didn’t begin again until 1st July whilst still on crutches and used photography as a way to get me walking and seeing. It was an amazing thing to do because it helped me to heal.
At that point I started a 365 photo a day project which was great because I made sure I took those photos and looked at other people’s work and throughout the year improved my skills tremendously.
January 2011 I did a Creative Photography Course for 10 weeks with Natasha Lythgoe at Evolution Arts. That was good but I was still left with really wanting to learn more in the way of technical skills.
At this time I joined the Camera Club and recall feeling in total awe of everyone and terrified too!
I took the intermediate level of the Creative Photography Course with Natasha in June 2011 and in July 2011 began the real journey which was joining a Foundation in Photography with the School of Photographic Imaging. I completed the course in 10 months and came out with my qualification. The important thing here was that I learned all the technical aspects (other than flash) that I needed and discovered where some of my real strengths lay. I was featured as Star Student in Amateur Photographer magazine, featured again with several photos and received Editor’s Choice and more recently they gave me centre page spread (3 pages of print) with photos and an interview called Going for Gold. That was pretty amazing.
I was at a loss when the course was over and joined the Open College of the Arts to do a BA in Photography. My first assignment was received very well indeed and I’ve been fortunate that I have a wonderful tutor.
In September 2012 I gained a place on the International Urban Photography Summer School at Goldsmiths and wow!!! I learned so much and this led to my application to the MA thus bypassing the degree.
So I got my place on the MA – I’m completing one module of the degree programme just for fun now.
Since the summer school the tutor recommended my work to Artmongers and some of my Deptford project work was beamed across walls in New Cross. That was fun!
I’m about to be featured in the first newsletter of the International Association of Visual Urbanists. I joined the organisation in the Autumn and it’s linked with Goldsmiths. The tutor for the MA and Summer School is involved with it and recommended that I am given the first member profile space. This means that some of my Deptford work will be given an international airing.
So that’s it … I’m quite overwhelmed with it all. If you would like to put a bit of this up as news that would be great … I’ve obviously worked so hard and a no better than anyone else. Blimey … I look at the photos from people in the club and I’m way down the list …!!!
Thanks a lot David!!
All the best
Gill
