“From the North looking South” Hop Gallery, Lewes

Monday 26th March 2012

David Stacey and Graham Carlow both studied photography in the 1980’s at Derbyshire College at a time when it was known by some as the “small dark school of photography.”  From their northern roots they now use the iconic landscape and scenic views of the south from their Lewes bases to explore photography as a medium.

For Graham coming to Lewes has been a reconnection to the idea of landscape photography.
His images are made from multiple photographs of the landscape and are an attempt to replay some of the experience of being there, while still being reminded of the image surface, and the assembly method.  This is thinking past the idea of the photograph as an instance captured in one moment; closer to the process of making a painting or drawing, or even a film.

David’s photographs use the “Through the Viewfinder” method to question the veracity of the photograph. In the same way that every individual’s perception of the world around them is a product of their past experience these images;  mediated through a second camera, ask the viewer to consider photographs as an abstraction of reality; a moment frozen in time and selected from space.
