Royal Photographic Society Distinction Successes

Wednesday 14th March 2012

Congratulations to Derek Boocock who obtained his Licentiateship at Birmingham  a couple of weeks ago.

Also congratulations to Jean Gerrard and Ray Gray who both obtained their Associateships at Bath today. Both panels were unanimously accepted and the prints have been retained by the R.P.S. for training purposes.

I think these successes only go to underline the fantastic support given to Brighton & Hove members by our Distinctions Team. We have no further workshops planned before the end of this season unless you want them. Please contact me (david.gerrard@ntlworld.com) if you would like another session this season to show some of your  images that might start you off on the road to an R.P.S. Distinction. I will then try and arrange something with the Distinctions Team.

Studio Flash Workshops

Sunday 11th March 2012

Studio Flash Workshops

The next studio portraiture workshops will be held on Saturday April 14th. Our host is member Philip Bigg, who owns a studio in central Brighton, called Velvet Goldmine. It’s in the North Laine so parking is limited, although walking distance from the station.

The format this time will be three separate 3 hour workshops, from 9-12pm, 12.30-3.30pm, and 4-7pm. The cost will be £25, to cover studio hire with professional equipment, and a different model for each session. To avoid the problems of large numbers we have had in the past we would like to restrict each session to just four people, so everybody will get lots of time taking photographs, not just watching. We also propose to divide the sessions into beginners, for those who have no previous experience of setting up lights, and more advanced, for those who essentially want to be left alone to get on with it. If this day works we would repeat it for anyone who cannot make the date, or if the sessions are oversubscribed.

So if you would like to attend please let me know by email at paul.stillman@media-medics.co.uk, indicating any choice of time and level of experience. I will then try to match up as best I can.

Thanks

Paul.

Eve Arnold’s Brides of Christ finds new home at V&A

Tuesday 6th March 2012

A photograph by Eve Arnold of young women in wedding dresses and elaborate veils on their way to become brides of Christ as nuns has been bequeathed to the V&A.

It is the first acquisition by the museum of a work by the photographer who died in January just short of her 100th birthday.

The signed and inscribed gelatin silver print was given by Arnold to the late Robin Warwick Gibson, a former chief curator at the National Portrait Gallery where he worked on establishing the photography collection and mounted a major exhibition of Arnold’s work in 1991. He died in 2010 and left the print to the V&A through the Art Fund.

Arnold was renowned for winning the trust of her subjects and capturing them in intimate moments, whether celebrities, such as Marilyn Monroe, or the women the photographer captured in a pool of light from a cloister window. The photograph is one of a series on the lives of nuns that Arnold took during the mid-1960s, which included images of women in different convents at work and prayer. The full title of the V&A’s new addition is A Meeting of the Brides of Christ on their Wedding Day to their Lord at the Nunnery in Godalming, Surrey.

Martin Roth, director of the museum, said the V&A was thrilled to add the image to its vast photography collections, and described the image as “a splendid example of the work of Eve Arnold, one of the finest photojournalists of our time”.

There are plans for a future display of the print in the V&A’s photography gallery.

Francis Frith

Friday 24th February 2012

BBC Two Daytime has commissioned Reef Television to produce Britain’s First Photo Album, a 10×30-minute series on the extraordinary achievement of Francis Frith, the pioneer Victorian photographer who embarked upon a colossal project to photograph as much of the United Kingdom as possible during the second half of the 19th century. The series will air from 12-23 March 2012.

The pictures taken by Frith and his staff are viewed as one of the first and most comprehensive pictorial records of the UK, a wonderfully evocative record of our shared history, and equally a present-day insight into the social landscape of Britain.

Presented by John Sergeant, each episode will focus on four storylines, all inspired by a Frith photo. Over the series, 40 of Frith’s best images will be showcased, demonstrating his remarkable endeavour to visually capture Britain on camera, along with another 40 new ones that John will take himself.

To get to the heart of each picture, John will look to unfold the significance of each image, bringing them to life by meeting present day people who have a connection to these stories from the past. Each show will have a fascinating mix of different stories, taking us on a journey across Britain.

This is the first time Frith’s collection has been brought together in one series, and so Britain’s First Photo Album will offer viewers a look back on this astonishing visual record of our nation: at what has changed; at what remains the same, and ultimately, what it tells us about who we are today.

A book with the same title will be published in February to accompany the series. John Buck of The Francis Frith Collection said: “We are delighted to be part of this project, which showcases our archive photographs in such an entertaining way. This tie-in book from the TV series will link the evocative Frith images with an insight into present-day Britain, forming a fascinating record of our shared history and the social landscape of our country, past and present.”

The book will include a selection of Frith’s photos, plus those taken by Sergeant of the same locations in the present day. Each chapter will focus on four storylines inspired by Frith’s photographs, as Sergeant travels the country to meet those with a connection to the images. Sergeant will also write a foreword.

In addition to the television programmes and book, and to harness the enthusiasm generated from the programme, BBC Learning is working with a range of partners, including museums, libraries and historical societies to support free events which will tie in to the series. The programme airs at the beginning of March, with a call to action at the beginning of the series, and events will take place from the weekend 16-18 March.

How you can get involved

Organisations will be encouraged to host events and activities which encourage the public to find out about their local heritage and the history of photography. There are lots of ways to get involved – host an event or talk, design a walk, showcase local photographer’s work or the work of Francis Frith and much more.

BBC Learning is producing a number of resourses to support events and activities of many sizes these include:

- Suggested Activity Guide

- Marketing Materials e.g. Posters and Postcards

- Souvenir learning booklets to accompany the series

- Stickers

- Downloadable bunting
