Club Exhibitions

Photographs are made to be seen – but the cost of exhibiting as an individual can be quite prohibitive. Being part of the Brighton and Hove Camera club makes this much easier, and as a result, exhibitions are a very popular feature of BHCC’s activities. We have a dedicated exhibitions team organising the venues, a team of experienced judges to select, and volunteer helpers to transport and hang the work. We have a stock of frames which are loaned out free of charge for our club exhibitions. Club members exhibit their prints at least once a year.

Past exhibition venues have included the cafe restaurant ‘Made’ in North Road, and the prestigious Jubilee Library in central Brighton. Members are free to sell their exhibition prints privately, and the club does not take commission.

The Beach Exhibition 2020-21

The ‘Take and Make’ Beach Exhibition

Posted: 13th June

We’re sure many people have been wondering about the future of the Seafront exhibition in these uncertain times.

We must stress that we cannot guarantee that the space will even remain available!  But despite times being so different, we are hoping a new show will go ahead – and we’re planning for that, as we think that many of you would still like this unique chance to exhibit – and such an excellent exhibition venue shouldn’t be lost.

The exhibition area is located on the beach directly in front of the Grand Hotel. It is administered not by the club but by the Tides group, who share their 47 picture spaces with us in between their exhibitions. They planned to hang their full exhibition there in October, but lockdown has made it it impossible to complete their projects in time. They have now kindly offered 40 of the spaces on the seafront exhibition back to Brighton and Hove Camera Club.

The current club show will remain in place until October, at which point it will be replaced with a new combined Tides / BHCC show which will run well into next year.

Invite for Entries

So we’d like to invite all members to enter for the 20/21 Seafront Show by submitting, for selection:

  • ONE small (low res) jpeg of your choice by midnight on 12th July 2020. (It’s important to have the identical high resolution file to hand too, from which the A1 print can be made for the exhibition!)
  • It should be Brighton related and loosely on the theme of ‘Take and Make.
  • Entries should be via the entry form below.
  • File size should be the same as when submitting for club critiques:
  • Max 1080 high x Max 1920 long

Selection for the exhibition will take place in late July, and your large file must be made available for printing in mid August.  Actual dates will be announced on the website.

The print cost will be about £56, which is payable to the club, who will then arrange for your selected entry to be printed and exhibited on Brighton Beach.  The A1 prints are made on aluminium panels and laminated with a weather-resistant coating, which has proved to withstand the ravages of beach weather extremely well. The print will be returned to you at the end of the showing period.

We must also stress that we certainly don’t want anyone to disregard the Covid-19 lockdown rules & conditions, so we suggest that now is the time to go back through your files, and find a great image which fits the bill.

The Beach Exhibition

In 2018, BHCC launched a show on an innovative format known as caissons – a brand new exhibition space which holds no less than forty seven large photographs on the very shingle of Brighton Beach, right in front of the Grand Hotel, where they receive a footfall of around 36,000 passers-by a day throughout the summer! The A1 prints are made on aluminium panels and laminated with a weather-resistant coating, which has proved to withstand the ravages of beach weather extremely well.

The first BHCC Beach Exhibition was in the summer of 2018, and another opened on 1st July 2019. Both have attracted great acclaim, even appearing on local TV.

The current show is expected to remain there over the Xmas period and well into 2020, so if you’d like to know more, take a trip to the beach and see for yourself!
