The New Members Group

We are one of the few clubs that look after our new members by offering a specific programme when you first join. Our New Members Evenings run throughout the winter season and offers new and experienced photographers workshops, critiques and plenty of other help. Also keep an eye on our New Members Group News for what we have been up to recently.

Workshops

PRACTICAL & HANDS ON

As well as coming to Members Evenings on a Tuesday, new members are also invited to our New Members Evenings. They take place on Thursdays, approximately monthly, at the English Language Centre, in Salisbury Road, Hove.

New Members Evenings are workshop-based and so are a great way to develop your photographic skills. There is an emphasis on developing your photographic eye and thinking about how we communicate visually. The workshop programme includes illustrated talks on making your photography more dynamic, creating abstract work and thinking about how images work together as sets. There are also workshops on practical subjects, such as basic post-processing techniques, and follow-up themed competitions, where your work is assessed by the workshop leaders.

All Levels

PHOTOGRAPHERS OF ALL LEVELS

The New Members Group is for photographers of all levels, from beginners through to those who are experienced. You’ll get feedback on your work as well as learning practical skills. You also have the opportunity to share your own expertise and ideas.

The Thursday New Members Evenings are smaller and more informal than the Tuesday Members Evenings and are a great way to meet other new members. We like to round off the evening at the nearby Hove Place pub, which is another good way to get to know each other.

We suggest that new members attend New Members Evenings for their first year, but this is up to you. We also recommend that you join our mailing list and/or update your preferences to receive information about the New Members Group.

TUESDAYS & THURSDAYS

We encourage new members to come to the Club’s Tuesday evenings as well as to the Thursday workshops. The Club attracts visiting speakers from all walks of photography and they are invariably generous with their experience, knowledge and advice. We also encourage new members to enter images for Tuesday critique evenings, which is another way of having your work assessed by commentators from both outside and within the club. Members are also encouraged to submit entries to Club exhibitions and to external exhibitions and competitions.

We look forward to seeing you.

Dynamic Photography Critique

There were 41 images submitted by 22 members and, for some, it was their first ever critique. Jerry Webb did a great job, examining each one on its merits and offered clear, positive criticism without pulling any punches! Congratulations to [...]

Inspiration from Jerry Webb

Thanks to Jerry Webb for an excellent workshop for the New Members Group. Over 30 club members absorbed his 22 point guide to dynamic photography.

A great start for the New Members Group

The New Members Group got off to a great start on Thursday 19th September at the ‘Welcome’ evening. There were 24 new members, some of whom were completely new to photography through to others who are professional photographers.

Would you like to volunteer?

Volunteering is a great way to help the club and also helps new members get to know other members quickly.

Even if you only sign up for one ‘volunteer spot’, it helps a lot more than you might think and is much appreciated.
